hazel
Right now, you’re probably thinking ‘who on earth is Hazel?’ And it’s a fair enough question, but actually, you should be asking ‘what on earth’, because ‘Hazel’ is in fact a train carriage – a beautifully well-kept First Class Pullman dining carriage, which sits beside the pub and is connected (or should we say coupled) to the main building via the mezzanine level of the conservatory. With a large selection of double tables and a private cabin seating four all in immaculate condition, Hazel simply demands to be seen.
Hazel was built in 1932 by Metro-Cammell as part of a five-car electric Pullman train. She entered service in 1933 on Southern Railway's Brighton Belle, and was still operating when the Victoria to Brighton service was axed in 1972 despite nationwide protests.
The multiple unit was split up and sold off, and Hazel was purchased by Audrey Pagendam and put into use as one of the country’s most unique dining spaces.
Every five years since, the carriage has been refurbished with painstaking attention to period detail, even down to the horsehair stuffing under the beautiful racing green coloured upholstery. The result is gorgeous – you will not get a restaurant experience like it anywhere else!
This very special dining carriage is always popular with our customers and is booked out well in advance so if you are interested in making a booking for Hazel then we will do out utmost to accommodate you.
